MARIUS PETIPA MONUMENT

Nowadays the concept of the Russian ballet is one of the most popular and highly estimated cultural brands all over the world, which embodies the undisputed authority of Russian choreographs, composers, and ballet artists. The Marius Petipa monument project is conceived to strengthen the image of St. Petersburg as one of the largest world classic ballet centers as well as to contribute to the preservation of the cultural potential of Russia.

The Marius Petipa monument project is a part of the Farukh Ruzimatov Foundation program “The Cultural Memory of St. Petersburg: Names and Events.” The worldwide glory of the Russian ballet is associated with the name of the Russian legendary choreographer, ballet dancer, and professor Marius Petipa. 2008 is the year of the 190th anniversary of the renowned choreographer. In token of respect and memory about Marius Petipa the Farukh Ruzimatov Foundation initiated the creation of the world first monument to the distinguished master in St. Petersburg.

M. Petipa spent in St. Petersburg over 60 years; he worked at the Theatre College as a professor and at the Mariinsky Theatre as a ballet artist and chief choreographer. The choreographic legacy of Petipa is represented by more than 70 ballets, many of which are regarded as benchmark of classical choreography: “Paquita”, “Don Quixote”, “Coppelia”, “La Bayadere”, “Esmeralda”, “The Sleeping beauty”, “La Sylphide”, “Cinderella”, “The Nutcracker”, “The Swan Lake”, “Raymonda”, “The Magic Mirror”, etc.
In his choreography M. Petipa followed simple principles such as plastique, symphony, grace, expressiveness, and beauty. We believe that once the appropriate sculptural and architectural design for the Marius Petipa monument is found it will become the worthy continuation of the best architectural traditions of St. Petersburg.

The Petipa monument project primary stages are summarized below:
  • The preparation and opening of the competition for the best artistic and architectural design of the Marius Petipa monument. The award ceremony.
  • The approval of the artistic and architectural project in accordance with the city regulations.
  • The open competitions for the chief contractor for the detail design, building and installation works.
  • The opening ceremony of monument involving all the interested parties.

We invite everybody to participate in this project realization. Everybody can contribute to the creation of the monument already now.
